Open office hours – Help connecting to UBC ARC Sockeye help (virtual)

Description: This optional virtual drop-in provides attendees with a chance to make sure they are set up for a successful week of learning. If you are having problems connecting to UBC ARC Sockeye (Sockeye) or are unsure about any of the log-in steps, feel free to come chat with ARC staff to help walk you through these steps.
Advanced Research Computing and Research Computing Open Houses

Description: To kick off the week’s bootcamp, we invite UBC researchers to attend this open house to meet instructors and learn more about Advanced Research Computing and Research Computing, UBC-O services. These departments offer services beyond our high performance computing and are here year-round to support researchers in their computing needs. We will be hosting two in-person only sessions simultaneously – one in Vancouver and one in Okanagan.
Introduction to Unix shell – What you need to know for the week
Date: Tuesday, October 4, 2022

Description: While the idea of using the command line interface seems daunting to new users, it is a necessary tool that provides access to compute much faster than any laptop or PC. To help beginners, this course offers an introduction to the UNIX shell for those completely new to the command line or who want a refresher. The workshop will begin by having users connect to UBC ARC Sockeye (Sockeye), and then will shift to describing what the shell is, why it is necessary for high performance computing clusters, and then will dive into hands-on demonstrations of basic commands to navigate files and directories.
Prerequisites:

Introduction to the Data Life Cycle and UBC ARC Sockeye
Date: Tuesday, October 4, 2022

Description: Traditionally, high performance computing (HPC) training has focused on the specific tasks and tools involved in the computing process, without recognizing how these processes fit into larger research workflows throughout the lifecycle of a project. This session will begin by outlining the data life cycle and considerations to be made at the beginning of a research project, and will discuss how these concepts relate to the Bootcamp’s structure and objectives.
The focus will then shift to an introduction to UBC ARC Sockeye (Sockeye), an HPC cluster housed at UBC, and will feature a hands-on demonstration to explore the structure of Sockeye, basic commands to move around the system and to organize files and folders, and will finish by having attendees transfer data between their personal computers and Sockeye, as well as transferring data from the web to Sockeye.

Software Installation on UBC ARC Sockeye

Description: While UBC ARC Sockeye offers a breadth of pre-installed software packages, researchers often have additional or alternative discipline specific software they want to use. In order to do so, installing software on UBC ARC Sockeye (Sockeye) is required. In this course, we walk through the ways software can be installed, when virtual environments and containers should be used, and touch on tips-and-tricks to help you install software in your own allocation, or know when to seek support from UBC ARC.

Running Jobs on UBC ARC Sockeye

Description: In order to get your computational results on UBC ARC Sockeye, you will need to understand how to submit a job on a compute node. Often researchers make the mistake of doing so without understanding best practices and how long the job may take. In this course, we will go over how you create, submit, monitor, and review your jobs. We will provide some tricks-and-tips on how to improve your resource requests and make sure your jobs run as soon as they can.

Using GPUs on UBC ARC Sockeye
Date: Thursday, October 6, 2022

Description: One of the most powerful tools high performance computing offers is access to GPUs, or graphics processing units, which is often used for AI, visualization, or complex modeling. However, it is also an area where many high performance computing users struggle to understand the best way to leverage the power GPUs offer. We introduce, in this course, the value of GPUs in your research, how to submit, run, and monitor GPU jobs, and how to troubleshoot when your job does not run.
This course is for beginners who are comfortable running jobs on high performance clusters or have attended the prior courses.

Parallel Computing on UBC ARC Sockeye

Description: Parallel computing offers researchers an opportunity to distribute their work across multiple cores at once, resulting in quicker results. During this course we provide a brief introduction on what parallel computing is, how to use it, and discuss related concepts and terminology. Attendees will learn how to run simple programs in parallel.
This course is for beginners who are comfortable running jobs on high performance clusters or have attended the prior courses.

Introduction to UBC ARC Chinook and Globus
Date: Friday, October, 7, 2022

Description: When working with large amounts of data, finding adequate storage space can be a challenge. This session will introduce UBC ARC Chinook (Chinook), an object storage platform housed at UBC and designed to retain large amounts of data, as well as Globus, which is a secure and efficient tool to transfer large amounts of data. After introducing Chinook and its use cases, attendees will be walked through a hands-on demonstration of how to set up a Chinook allocation with Globus, how to share allocations and collections, as well as how to transfer data to and from Sockeye.

Depositing Data – Next Steps in Research Data Management

Description: Metadata, or “information about data”, is crucial for data to be understood and interpreted by others. Not only is this important for those collaborating on projects to discern their colleagues work, but as funders are increasingly requiring data to be shared after a project’s completion, metadata is fundamental to the data’s reusability. This session will begin by giving an overview of metadata types and best practices. It will then shift to introduce the Federated Research Data Repository (FRDR), which is a data repository specifically designed to house and share large data sets, and will provide a walk-through of depositing data into FRDR directly from UBC ARC Chinook (Chinook) using Globus file transfer.
