Blog feature: Accelerating Economic Research at UBC with High Performance Computing Using RONIN and AWS

August 8, 2023

University of British Columbia (UBC) computer scientists Dr. Kevin Leyton-Brown and his PhD student Neil Newman are exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and microeconomic theory. The demands of their research include large-scale, high-performance computing capacity, particularly when exploring parallel simulations of intricate auction systems.

When embarking on an in-depth computational analysis of the 2016 United States wireless spectrum auction, Leyton-Brown and Newman found that their existing computational infrastructure was insufficient. UBC's Advanced Research Computing (ARC) team guided them to UBC ARC RONIN, a research computing platform driven by Amazon Web Services (AWS). RONIN enabled to team to leverage the virtually limitless resources of the AWS Cloud, enhancing their computational abilities and expediting their research.
