CANARIE strengthens Canadian leadership in science and technology by delivering digital infrastructure to support world-class research that directly benefits all Canadians. As part of its work, CANARIE has been funding the development of custom software to support academic research for more than a decade. In this session, Scott Henwood, the director of CANARIE’s Research Software Program, will introduce the program and discuss the following upcoming initiatives:
- Call for Proposals “2b” - a call to fund the sharing of existing research software rather than new, from-scratch software development. In this follow up to the highly successful Call 2a, CANARIE will be funding the adoption of existing research software by new users.
- Reusable Platform - the CANARIE technical team has evaluated existing research software platforms that have been designed with the goal of cross-discipline reuse and have selected a platform called HUBzero (hubzero.org). We are interested in assisting researchers in need of a research platform to adopt HUBzero and would like your thoughts on how best to accomplish this.
- Local Software Support - CANARIE is undertaking a fact-finding mission to understand how we can better support researchers by funding local groups of full-time research software developers at the institutional level. We’re interested in feedback from stakeholders on how this would work in the Canadian context and what such groups would look like.
