ARC Workshop – Introduction to Databases

June 27, 2022, 12:00 am to 11:59 pm

Research projects are increasingly leveraging databases in deciphering large datasets and implementing in-database analysis to enhance the scale of processing. To better understand how a database can be useful in support of scientific research projects, we are hosting Introduction to Databases online workshop. In this workshop, we will provide an overview of databases and then use a case study example to demonstrate how to build a relational database from scratch, interact with your database, and perform in-database analytics. We will cover:

  • What is a database and why it is important?
  • Where to host your database?
  • How to build a relational database from scratch?
  • How to manage users?
  • How to secure your database?
  • How to interact with your database?
  • How to perform in-database analytics?

Date: June 27, 2022, 09:30-12:00 PDT
Venue: Zoom virtual event
Difficulty level: Beginner
Target audience: Anyone who is interested in databases as a tool to store, manipulate and utilize data.

Prerequisites:

  • Attendees should have some basic understanding of Linux command line.
  • Lightweight python scripts will be used for in-database analytics, but coding will not be covered in the workshop. Python programming skills are not a requirement for this course.
  • Experience with database integrated development environment (IDE) and code editor is helpful but not a requirement.
