ECOSCOPE R Workshop — may 14-15
Date: May 14-15
Location:Room LSC3, 2350 Health Sciences Mall, UBC.
ECOSCOPE is partnering with Koonkie Cloud Services to deliver a 2.5 day hands-on workshop on the analysis of small subunit ribosomal RNA gene tag data sets. The objective of the workshop is to equip participants to perform principled and reproducible analyses of their own data sets using QIIME for data processing and R for downstream analyses and generation of data products. A toy data set will be provided prior to the workshop, as well as a list of resources so participants can familiarize themselves with both programs before the second day of the workshop. No previous knowledge of QIIME or R is required.
Background
SSU rRNA genes contain detailed taxonomic information, are well conserved, and are universally distributed across all three domains of life making them an excellent candidate for taxonomic analyses of microbial communities that can be quickly and cost effectively collected from a wide variety of natural and engineered ecosystems including our own bodies. However, analysis of such data sets can be difficult given the complexity and size of data (20-25 gigabases per sample) and requires a working knowledge of both biology and bioinformatics. This workshop covers (i) support installing the necessary software tools (ii) data processing using QIIME (qiime.org) and (iii) downstream data analysis in R (r-project.org). The workshop uses previously published data but will equip attendees to perform principled and reproducible analyses of their own data sets. Please note this workshop covers only data processing and analysis, and does not include sample collection or data generation.
