Canada’s research funding agencies launch Research Data Management (RDM) policy

March 25, 2021

The Tri-Agency Research Data Management (RDM) Policy has now been launched. The agencies (SSHRC, NSERC and CIHR) plan to implement the policy incrementally through an ongoing engagement process, with notable dates highlighted below.

  • Institutional strategies: By March 1, 2023, research institutions subject to this requirement must post their RDM strategies and notify the agencies when they have been completed.
  • Data management plans: By spring 2022, the agencies will identify the initial set of funding opportunities subject to the DMP requirement. The agencies will pilot the DMP requirement in targeted funding opportunities before this date.
  • Data deposit: After reviewing the institutional strategies and in line with the readiness of the Canadian research community, the agencies will phase in the deposit requirement.

Our institutional RDM strategy is being led by the UBC Research Data Management Strategy Project and Steering Committee that was launched in September 2020 to develop a strategy that will enhance support for all researchers, while respecting discipline-specific requirements. Additional UBC-focused guidance for researchers preparing Data Management Plans will be provided as the institutional strategy is developed.

Assistance for UBC researchers wishing to access RDM resources and support is provided through a collaboration between UBC Library, Advanced Research Computing and the Office of the Chief Information Officer. Please visit  https://arc.ubc.ca/research-data-management for more information.
