APPLY FOR ACCESS TO UBC ARC CHINOOK

UBC researchers in need of storage resources for data-intensive research are invited to apply for access to UBC ARC Chinook. This object storage service has been designed to significantly increase UBC’s storage capacity and supplement the storage resources available through the national platform, in order to meet the immediate needs of UBC researchers.

Chinook easily integrates with UBC ARC Sockeye for fast and convenient data transfer to the compute platform through Globus.

If you need any assistance in filling out your application, or you have any questions about whether your research data is a good fit for Chinook, please reach out to us for a consultation at arc.support@ubc.ca.

APPLY FOR A CHINOOK ALLOCATION

Applications for Chinook allocations can be submitted at any time of the academic year.

Applications are submitted through ARC Access Management Portal, UBC ARC’s self-service platform. Click here for detailed instructions.

WHAT CAN RESEARCHERS APPLY FOR?

Object storage supports large volumes of research data that does not require large inputs and outputs on a regular basis, but need to be archived or retained for analytics.

Allocations are provided based on the proof of need by the applicant. Applicants will be required/requested to justify why the storage is needed, how it is an appropriate storage type (e.g., not file or block storage) and how they estimated the requested usage quota (i.e., number of TB). Priority is given to researchers who are:

  • New to UBC (i.e., five years or fewer).
  • Early career researchers.
  • Have research data that must be hosted on-site or cannot be accommodated by any other existing computational resources (e.g. Compute Canada).

Please see UBC ARC Chinook Application Guidelines for more information.

ELIGIBILITY

Researchers with a Faculty appointment at UBC or UBC Principal Investigators are eligible to request an allocation on the Chinook platform. Use of the system is contingent on acceptance of the UBC ARC Chinook Terms of Service.

Access is granted per research team or lab, with the requesting UBC Faculty member or Principal Investigator serving as Allocation Owner. Allocation Owners are able to request for any user to have access as long as they have an enhanced Campus Wide Login and an institutional email address.

Please consult the UBC ARC Chinook Application Guidelines for full eligibility requirements.

Applicants who are PIs on a UBC held award and do not hold a Faculty position must contact the ARC at support.arc@ubc.ca in order to apply for access to Chinook.
