Globus

Globus is a secure and reliable research data management service. Using Globus, you can quickly transfer data between your local computer, Sockeye, Chinook, and many research computing endpoints worldwide. 

Using Globus 

Globus offers two primary user interfaces, the Globus web interface (file manager) and the Globus Command Line Interface (CLI). The web interface provides a clickable, graphical interface for managing files. The CLI provides an interface to Globus services from the shell, and is suitable for both interactive and simple scripting use cases.

Globus also provides an API and Python SDK for programmatic access.

Globus Connect Personal

In addition to the above interfaces, Globus Connect Personal (GCP) may be installed in order to turn a local machine into a Globus endpoint. GCP allows Sockeye and Chinook users to transfer data between Sockeye or Chinook and their local computers, locally attached drives, or remotely attached network drives.

Globus Connect Server

Using Globus Connect Server (GCS) allows users to add a lab cluster, campus research computing system, or other multiuser HPC facilities as a Globus endpoint.

Note that GCS is designed for multi-user systems, and will typically be installed by a system administrator. If you would like to use your personal laptop or desktop computer with Globus, please install GCP instead for your specific operating system.

Globus Subscription Groups

Globus Subscription Groups users can create shared endpoints on their personal computers (using Globus Connect Personal) and transfer files between Globus Connect Personal endpoints..

 

Do I need to be a member of a Globus Subscription Group?

Note that being a member of Globus Subscription Group is not needed for all Globus users. If, for example, you want to share content on a server by using GCS, Globus Subscription Group is not needed as it only works with GCP, and GCS would better suit your needs. You should only consider joining a Globus Subscription Group if the following use-cases are applicable to you:

  1. You would like to transfer files between two GCP endpoints.
  2. You would like to share files (i.e. Guest Collections) from GCP endpoints with research collaborators.

You may request Globus Subscription Groups by applying to join the "University of British Columbia Globus Subscription Groups" group. Join requests are reviewed by the ARC team before being approved. You may be contacted for additional details or to clarify your request.
